Real movie dubbing is known only from Europe and Russia. In the US and England movies are rarely dubbed - because most of the movies come from there. In Asia, a voice over with multiple voices is often referred to as dubbing. Many films are only subtitled in the cinema or television.
Southeast Asian countries such as Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar are increasingly seeking western standards.
Especially Germany is considered a dubbing culture. How Germany became a dubbing nation, the Goethe Institute writes in a very informative analysis. In fact, dubbing is an art that has developed in Germany for decades over the cinema. Planet Wave Studios is the first company to bring this art to Southeast Asia. At the end of 2019, a Dubbing studio is to be set up in Vietnam, which will cover the Dubbing market for the region. There, feature films and series for Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar will be dubbed.
Initiator of the idea were the Japanese. For the first time ever, a series for public broadcasters TV3 Asia with 104 episodes was dubbed in Khmer. For this they commissioned the Planet Wave Studios from Germany. The company has been working for the German dubbing market since 1988. The cinema group Legend Cinemas let a blockbuster from Thailand for the first time completely dubbed for the cinemas. The reaction of the audience was quite amusing. They were surprised that the Thai actors could speak Khmer so well.
